INCOLA

End the Exile of Culture

Do you think perennial beauty and mysteries should be familiar topics of conversation? That folk songs and dances could be neighborhood pastimes? That it shouldn't be so hard to find a job that contributes to the actual common good?

We are calling all mad lovers of the True, Good, and Beautiful to help us end the exile of culture.

Join us for a symposium to ponder the nature of culture, learn the tools and methods for growing it, and join forces to incarnate Western Culture in our own communities.

Our Name

In Latin, "incola" signifies what the English language calls an "inhabitant." Sharing a root with words like "agriculture" and "cultivation," it bears the more precise meaning of someone who tills the earth, plants seeds, irrigates, and otherwise helps the land and the plants to grow according to their nature. Someone who cultures a place and in that very act makes it a home.

In Revelation, "incola" takes on a second meaning: the exile, an inhabitant and cultivator of a land not his own: "Heu mihi quia incolatus meus prolongatus est." "Woe is me, for my sojourn is prolonged."

These two senses encompass the entire scope of our conference: the problem, the goal, and the means to move from the one to the other.

Our problem is that the liberal artist is in exile: after becoming a member of a community living for the True, Good, and Beautiful, he leaves his alma mater for a world where such a life is not only absent, but unwelcome.

Our goal is to end this exile of culture by restoring or building communities living the fulness of Western Culture.

The means is to relearn the art of building culture. The incola in the literal sense successfully makes his land fruitful through the art of cultivation. We hope to likewise learn and employ the art and tools for planting and growing the seeds of culture in our communities.

By forming an army of lovers and deliberating the best methods and strategies for restoring culture in our communities, we will become true incolae: no longer exiles, but inhabitants and cultivators of a land we can call our home.
